Humboldt

Beginnings

Humboldt Motorsports was founded in 2008 with humble beginnings. Located along the US Highway 101 in a dingy outbuilding next to the Mill Yard and surrounded by potholes and stacks of weathered lumber. Initially the name was impressed with stencil lettering above the door. The only thing distinguishing this as a new business at the time was the amount of motorcycles and quads parked outside.

said the owner Roger Kirkpatrick in the business’s infancy gesturing at the line of bikes. He lifted a day-planner, revealing pages covered in pen marks.

“This is my appointment book for this week. It’s all word of mouth.”

Passion for

Motorsport Repair

In a camo Carhartt cap and black hoodie, Kirkpatrick is surprisingly laid-back for someone who opened his first business just three weeks ago. Then again, he’s been doing this kind of work for a long time. He was able to acquire automotive repair work experience at a young age and obtained a job as a motorcycle mechanic as soon as he finished high school. After the untimely passing of both parents, he left the North Coast to attend the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Arizona. He went on to immerse himself even deeper in his passion through education and by joining the Honda Plano Racing team as a race mechanic.

“As you can see, I have no signs. I’ve done no advertising. And this is all the work I got already”

Kirkpatrick returned to Humboldt County where he worked as a serviceman at Richard Miller Motorcycles for five years, earning certification from Honda and Yamaha. He then helped Mike Billington establish Eureka Motorsports Center and served as that company’s general manager for three-and-a-half years.

He obtained multiple certifications for brands like Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki bikes. It was at this point, that Kirkpatrick decided it was time to establish his own business.

“I’m at the point in my life where I need to do this” said the owner Roger Kirkpatrick in the business’s infancy gesturing at the line of bikes. He lifted a day-planner, revealing pages covered in pen marks.

“I’m at the point in my life where I need to do this” Kirkpatrick said.
